What is essential when it comes to skin care? There are tons of different products out there that make so many claims its hard to know what is essential when it comes to caring for your skin. What should you always do when it comes to skin care no matter what? Once we learn and apply this, that’s when you can go (if you want) and start trying things outsides of what is absolutely essential in giving your skin what it needs to be youthful, glowing and clear. So lets jump in.
Cleansers are first and foremost the most important when it comes to caring for your skin. Why? Because dirty skin is not pretty skin. Simple as that. Cleansing your skin is the first (topical) method of treatment and prevention of any skin issues you may be dealing with. Now, with cleansing, you can overdo it. Morning and evening will do the trick just fine. And save your heavier deeper cleansing for the evening or when your skin is at its dirtiest point. If you are cleansing more than twice per day, you could be causing the issues you are trying to treat. You do not want to wash your face more than two times per day as you could be stripping away natural oils from your skin leaving it dry as well as causing your oil glands to now go into overdrive to replace the oils which will lead to a breakout.
Also be sure that you are using a cleanser that is compatible for your skin. Some can be too harsh which will do the same thing as washing your face multiple times per day. Harsh cleanser strip away moisture. Opt for something gentler that will leave your skin clean but not totally dried out.
Many people skip toners but they are very important also. Toners come in many forms. Its recommended to use a gentle toner that is free of alcohols and harsh astringents. You want your toner to touch up any missed areas from your cleanser, while its prepping your skin for any add ons you apply next. Its going to help your skin get ready to absorb all it can from any serums, scrubs, masks, oils, moisturizers, etc that you choose to use in your routine which will yield better results from those products.
Moisturizing your skin is a step that cannot be skipped. Skin that is properly moisturized glows, is softer, and just has more life to it. Finding the proper moisturizer for your skin can be a challenge. For those with dry skin, a heavier moisturizer works best than for those who have oily skin. And often times those with oily skin sometimes choose not to use a moisturizer because their skin is oily and fear adding more will make it worse. I think I will actually do a post on how and why to moisturize oily skin.
When choosing moisturizers its important to keep in mind your skin type. If you are using a product with ingredients meant for a skin type other than what you have then you will not yield results you want. Also, don’t be afraid of using a single ingredient for your moisturizer. It will take to some trial and error to see what works best but often times the simplest product works the best. I know for me certain oils and butters don’t work well with my skin but others keep my skin looking and feeling hydrated and moisturized in the winter and summer months.
